do2gether Intro for Plone Developers (a.k.a. PloneGroups)

  • do2gether is the new name for the PloneGroups project.
  • do2gether 1.0 wants to be a Plone alternative to YahooGroups and GoogleGroups, with unique features for democratic organizing.
  • A partly functional version 0.8, built on Plone 2.1, and developed by more than 25 plone coders over the last 2 years, is available for interested developers to review. A demo site is available at: www.do2gether.net
  • It is a non profit effort brought forward by the newly-founded Telematics Freedom Foundation, starting from code donated by the Partecs.com, from Rome, Italy.
  • It uniquely attempts to ensure that any derivatives of the software will give FLOSS freedoms to its web users. See the innovative Code Access Policies we have devised to ensure that.
  • The Foundation has already secured funding for 100,000 euros to get the project off the ground and used by many thousands over the next year.
  • The project plans to release a first Alpha release by the summer based on Plone 3.0. These are some of the Plone technolgies that we are considering at the moment:
      • Templates and Skinning
      • plone.portlets, plone.app.portlets especially ViewletManagers,
      • Asynchronous content Views
      • KSS or Dojo
      • remember
      • Plone4Artists Calendar
      • Plone4Artists Audio, p4a.videoembed
      • feedfeeder and the rss portlet included in Plone 3.0 in plone.app.portlets

  • A public Draft Roadmap, with very extensive and high quality Roadmap Graphical Mockups, Draft Architecture and related discussions are available at this site. Draft Architecture has been worked out by Alec Mitchell, Vincenzo Barone of Abstract and Roberto Lupi.
  • Do2gether is counting on seeking the paid involvement of major contributors in the Plone Community to set off a project that both realizes a large amount of the Draft Roadmap, as well as spur a lively community of users, developers and contributors.
